چکیده
Numerous statistical and data-driven modeling frameworks have estimated rear-end crashes crash-prone events from macroscopic traffic states which are at the heart of flow modelling control. However, existing focus on critical exclude a vast majority safer interactions, essential information with respect to identifying trade-offs between congestion management crash prevention. This study proposes flexible conflict-based framework extract safety freeway state variables (i.e., speed density) by utilizing all underlying car-following interactions. Time spent in conflict (TSC) is introduced as total time vehicles conflicts based given measure threshold be determined flexibly. Using NGSIM vehicle trajectory dataset, we show that proportion stopping distance (PSD) more desirable than several event-based measures (e.g., collision) for describing TSC variables. Besides, it shown PSD provides explicit about entire travel each because applies paper hybrid methodological combining probabilistic machine learning models develop relationships within assessment framework. At first, Machine separately developed estimate PSD-based using only stte Each approach evaluated comprehensively against empirical observations dataset. While has better predictive accuracy fixed PSDcr), explaining capability captures thresholds. Freeway safety as a function of traffic flow.
In this paper, we present evidence of strong relationships between traffic flow conditions and the likelihood of traffic accidents (crashes), by type of crash. Traffic flow variables are measured using standard monitoring devices such as single inductive loop detectors. The key traffic flow elements that affect safety are found to be mean volume and median speed, and temporal variations in volu...
متن کاملFreeway Lighting and Traffic Safety-A Long-Term Investigation
The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of freeway lighting. To achieve this, a case study on traffic accident characteristics was conducted that utilized a suburban freeway area west of Frankfurt, Federal Republic of Germany, between 1972 and 1981. The study revealed that (a) the effects of lighting on suburban freeway accident rates was positive--there was a reduction in a...

Reactive traffic management strategies such as incident detection are becoming less relevant with the advancement of mobile phone usage. Freeway management in the 21st century needs to shift focus toward proactive strategies that include anticipating incidents such as crashes. A simple approach to identify freeway locations with high probability of crashes through real-time traffic surveillance...
